Concert Choir

  • A Superior Choir!

Under the guidance of School Music Director, Ms. Cindy Pierce, the Hmong College Prep Academy Concert Choir has consistently rated as one of the top high school choirs in the state.  At the most recent Minnesota State High School League large group competition, the HCPA Concert Choir received three Superior ratings, the best any group can receive.

Choir is an academic class that meets every other day.  Both Middle and High School students are able to participate in this interactive course.

Concert Choir is the option for all 9-12 grade students.  It is a very active group!  In addition to concerts at HCPA, they often perform at Hmong American New Year and area colleges.  To cap off the year, the choir takes an annual trip.  Often their trip takes them northward to Duluth, MN, the North Shore area and Chicago, IL.

In 2014, the choir took part in the College of St. Scholastica’s annual chorale clinic, toured St. Scholastica and University of Minnesota-Duluth campuses as well as visited local tourist destinations including Glensheen Mansion and Gooseberry Falls State Park.  A few daring souls even jumped into the frigid waters of Lake Superior...though only for a couple of seconds.

“This was a great experience,” stated Ms. Pierce. “It was good to get away into a totally new environment. It gave us the opportunity to bond as a group. Travelling really brings an ensemble closer and strengthens relationships. Because of this, you work musically better together.”

    Students echoed their teacher’s sentiments.

“This was a great bonding experience for everyone,” said senior PaHoua Lor.  “We all had to take care of each other in a place that was new to us. As a choir, I feel like we’ve definitely gotten closer and more comfortable. Sadly, us seniors will have to leave soon.”

Added senior Song Yang, “You only have one life to live, so enjoy it and take chances to jump into Lake Superior.”
