Concert Band

  • History in the Making!

The HCPA band program provides middle school students the opportunity to explore, perform and create music at no cost to themselves or their families. Students are learning how to play instruments such as the trombone, clarinet, flute and trumpet.  One of the most exciting aspects of the program is the collaboration between Dr. Yang Dao, Ph. D. (international diplomat, Hmong community leader and composer), HCPA music teachers and students who are composing a beginning band instrumental score for Sib Pab Ciaj Va by Dr. Yang Dao, Ph. D.

To the best of our knowledge, there is not a score for this culturally important piece. “It will be very inspiring” stated Music Director Cindy Pierce on what would happen if Hmong community members and HCPA families were to hear the composition performed simultaneously by her school’s choir and the band.

Added Superintendent Dr. Christianna Hang, “The idea that a school band and choir could perform this culturally important piece together is incredibly powerful...and historically motivating.”

This May, the composition will be performed in unison by the HCPA band and choir students.
