Dr. Christianna Mai-Choua Hang
Dr Christianna Mai-Choua Hang is the Founder and Superintendent of Hmong College Prep Academy (HCPA), the first Hmong-led charter school in the United States. Opening its doors in 2004 to 200 9th and 10th grade students, HCPA was founded on bringing world cultures and college readiness into all aspects of its academic programming. Dr. Hang initiated the development and planning of the Academy in 2000 and has provided the school with strategic management, educational programming expertise and technical support since its inception. In 2017, under her guidance and vision, HCPA’s enrollment reached 1,800 K-12th grade students. In 2018, HCPA’s enrollment reached 2,200 students, four years earlier than projected, making HCPA one of the largest single-site charter schools in Minnesota.
- In 2006, Dr. Hang formed HCPA’s sister building company, the Hmong Education Reform Company (HERC) to purchase new school facilities in St. Paul, MN. By December 2012, she led HCPA’s $24 million campus expansion and renovation bonding initiative that included a new 98,000 square feet high school, state of the art auditorium, new K-8 gymnasium and commercial kitchen that served over 950+ students.
- In 2009, Dr. Hang co-founded a second K-6 school, College Prep Elementary (CPE) in St. Paul, MN. She provided technical and program support to all aspects of the school.
- In December 2016, Dr. Hang led the HCPA District to obtain a $48 million dollar bond to expand the school’s K-12 school facilities. The school’s second expansion project will include renovating the current middle school wing to create more classrooms, construction of a new 98,180 square feet elementary building, adding a new, state-of-the-art sports dome to accommodate the ten-plus sports currently being offered, and a multi-purpose outdoor sports facility for football, soccer and track & field. The school’s 2016 campus expansion will mark Minnesota’s largest charter school financing project to date. Upon completion, HCPA will be the state’s largest single site charter school. In addition, the school will increase from 158,749 to 256,929 square feet, which will provide the capacity to serve over 2,200 students.
- Hang also serves as HCPA’s Chief Financial Officer. Since her tenure, she has led the district to increase its total annual budget from $2.5 million in 2004 to $21.3 million in 2016, with a net surplus of 55.1%. By 2022, the district’s total annual budget is estimated to reach over $33 million with a net surplus of 55.6%.
In addition, Dr. Hang has 25+ years of successfully working within traditional K-12 public and charter school administration systems. She also brings 15+ years of exemplary entrepreneurial finance, business management and strategic planning skills from her experience as a corporate office and small-business owner. Dr. Hang is also an active member in her community and serves as a volunteer board member, chairwoman, and president for a number of non-profit organizations.
