College Prep Activities in Full Swing at HCPA

St. Paul, MN—Though the 2016-17 school term ended in June, Hmong College Prep Academy students and parents have been actively involved in college search and enrollment activities.

“Making the correct college choice has turned into a year-round activity for high school students,” stated HCPA Superintendent Dr. Christianna Hang. “As a college-focused school, it is important that we continue to update our student resources to ensure a smart decision is made.”

Enrollment Boot Camp

HCPA hosted their 2017-18 Enrollment Boot Camp in July. The two-day event, which attracted 50 students and parents, focused on a number of key college search activities including:

  • The do’s and don'ts of composing a college application essay
  • Financial aid and scholarships
  • Prepping for a college interview
  • America’s best universities

“Our Enrollment Boot Camp is one of a number programs we will be offering throughout the upcoming school year, thanks in part to grants from The St. Paul, and Mardag Foundations,” stated School Counselor Cecelia Lee. “There is a lot more college prep programming, including seminars and hands-on workshops, being planned. We are very grateful for the support of these community-focused foundations.”

Iowa College Tour

A group of HCPA juniors recently returned from a four-day tour of Iowa colleges, including stops at Coe College, Drake University and Luther College.

“Probably the most important step a prospective college student can take is to actually visit a campus,” stated Toni Marie O’Daniel, HCPA’s College and Scholarship Manager. “By organizing a tour of multiple colleges, we are providing the opportunity to experience a campus that more than likely wasn’t on a student’s radar. In addition, visiting a school provides a benchmark by which other campuses can be measured.”

Students took part in a number of activities including tours of classrooms, lab facilities and dormitories, talks with current college students and roundtable discussions with professors and enrollment professionals. Each college also included informative sessions on financial aid, tuition and scholarship opportunities.

Yale Summer Institute

The school recently completed its ninth annual Yale Summer Institute, a summer program that helped 9-12 grade students with their college selection and application process.

The Yale Summer Institute is a part of Yale’s Bulldogs Across America, an alumni-lead program that provides students with internship opportunities in nine US cities.  HCPA students worked closely with three Yale University interns who coordinated the program throughout the summer.  The interns helped participants with college selection and application activities such as:

  • Preparing for college entrance exams.
  • Researching and selecting a college.
  • Applying to a college.
  • Researching financial aid opportunities.
  • Composing scholarship and college entrance essays.

"We are very proud of this year's Yale Summer Institute participants," stated HCPA Superintendent Dr. Christianna Hang. "Not only did they learn a lot about how to pick the college that's right for them, participants really improved in their test-taking, writing and communication skills. HCPA is very grateful for the work this year's Yale mentors did for our students."
