Fall School Updates for 2020/2021 8/2/2020

Dear Hmong College Prep Academy students and families,

Over the summer, Hmong College Prep Academy leadership teams have been creating plans for three possible school reopening scenarios for Fall 2020 which we were asked to explore by the Minnesota Department of Education and Governor Walz. The models to be discussed were:

1)      In-person student learning at school

2)      Hybrid –model (part distance learning, part in-person learning at school)

3)      Distance learning

In July, we sent out surveys to our families and staff to elicit feedback on HCPA’s Reopening School Plan for the fall and the potential scenarios listed above. Overwhelmingly, families and staff expressed concerns for the safety of the students, themselves and the community in the wake of COVID-19.

After taking this valuable feedback into consideration along with the Governor’s direction, MDE’s Guidance, the county COVID-19 data where our students reside, the Governing School Board, Administration and the Fall Planning Committee is happy to announce that HCPA will be implementing the following:

·     Distance Learning Model for the 2020/2021 School Year (with close monitoring of COVID-19 County data cases to determine if it is safe to continue the Distance Learning Model with onsite support for at-risk students as we approach second semester).

·     HCPA has committed to purchasing iPads for all K-2 students for digital/distance learning.

We arrived at this decision after much deliberation, knowing there are many pros and cons to distance learning. At this time, HCPA feels that distance learning is the safest option for HCPA’s students, families, teachers and staff. We are working hard to learn from the spring distance learning experience to enhance our fall distance teaching and learning plans and improve in the way we deliver education to our K-2 students. To this end, HCPA will be purchasing and distributing new iPads to all k-2 students to enhance distance learning education.

Over the next few weeks, the Admin and Fall Planning Teams will be working on plan specifics and will share those details as they become available. Please be assured that we will keep you updated as we continue to monitor COVID-19 developments and assess plans for the remainder of school year as needed, and as COVID-19 impacts our communities.

Please reach out to us if you have any questions, and please stay tuned to our website and social media for further developments.

With warmest regards,

Dr. Christianna Hang
